RIDE @ New Century Hall

Tonic Music are delighted to be providing a mental health stand at various dates on the RIDE UK Tour 2024.

Tonic Music had been on tour previously with guitarist Andy Bell Last and it was great to join him again with RIDE at the New Century Hall in Manchester on 13th September 2024.

RIDE are a rock band hailing from Oxford and are best  known for helping pioneer the shoegaze sound in the late '80s and early '90s.

Their music blends dreamy, atmospheric guitar sounds with melodic vocals and catchy rhythms, and albums like Nowhere (1990) are considered classics of the genre.

Over time, they’ve incorporated elements of Britpop and rock into the shows, but they remain best known for their swirly, textured soundscapes - a time period for the band that is held most dear in the hearts of fans, as a sea of t-shirts featuring shoegaze classics such such as Slowdive and Sonic Youth.

Tonic Music has always put particular emphasis on the importance of upholding a physical presence within the music scene - seen within the charity's early days which consisted of gaining exposure through both putting on and attending gigs.

This is still reflected with Tonic Music today, making meaningful connections across all the different music communities.

Our stall was situated next to the merch stand, and not only did I get to enjoy the show with a great view, but I had the opportunity to connect with many people, from various walks of life. Speaking to the general public, tour crew and venue staff, a deep understanding and appreciation was expressed for the necessity of the work of Tonic Music.

Discussion was held regarding people’s own experience of the positive relationship that engaging with music has had on their mental health, others shared insights into the unique pressures that come with being part of the rock scene, from the touring lifestyle to the emotional highs and lows of performing.

RIDE themselves expressed great appreciation for our presence at the show, and even gave Tonic Music a shout-out on stage!

Everyone was super welcoming and expressed a real understanding of our cause - they were grateful we were there, and we felt the love and support for Tonic Music’s mission.

It was a perfect night of live music and meaningful connection. I left feeling inspired, knowing that we’re making a real difference by raising awareness for mental health in the music industry.
