World Mental Health Day @ New Century Hall, Manchester

World Mental Health Day is upon us again, with this year’s theme being, 'It is time to prioritise mental health in the workplace,' resonating deeply with the work of Tonic Music.

There are various issues that can present themselves that are symptomatic of someone who engages in music, whether that is on a professional or recreational basis.

For those working in the music industry, intense pressure can be caused by a myriad of specific stressors, such as irregular hours, financial insecurity, and public scrutiny; which can lead to burnout, anxiety, and depression. In addition, personal sacrifices, such as time away from family on tour and unstable work-life balance, exacerbate these issues.

Mental health in the workplace is especially relevant for those working in music venues, where long hours, high-pressure events, and irregular schedules. The staff, whether working on the music side or the hospitality side, often face intense demands, including managing crowds, tight performance schedules, and logistical challenges. Prioritising mental health in these environments can help improve job satisfaction, reduce turnover, and create a more supportive and productive workplace.

For venues and the wider music industry, Tonic Music aims to help foster open and honest conversation surrounding this subject- through implementing our support system derived from therapeutic sessions, peer groups, preventative workshops and training courses.

Situated in Manchester city centre, New Century Hall is a leading venue, known for hosting a plethora of musical talent and its historical significance.

As part of New Century Kitchen, the venue boasts a variety of cultural food stalls, a bar, stage, and large indoor and outdoor seating areas- which provide an ideal space for community gatherings and pre-show meetups.

With its excellent facilities and large capacity, New Century Hall is truly a melting pot for attracting diverse acts as a popular community hub for music lovers of Manchester and the surrounding areas. Herman's Hermits, The Hollies, The Kinks, and Procol Harum also developed their musical chops at the venue before achieving worldwide fame, and the hall also hosted the renowned all-night Acid House parties of the MADchester scene in the 1980s.

New Century Hall’s new event on the scene, 'Unplugged,' is a bi-weekly acoustic live music event held on Thursday evenings, with the goal of offering young adult musicians a platform to share their talent in an intimate and accessible environment. By showcasing performances from up-coming, local musicians, the event cultivates an authentic, stripped-back experience, fostering a strong connection between the artist and the audience.

In recognition of World Mental Health Day, the upcoming 'Unplugged' event promises to be something truly special. This Thursday, Unplugged are working in collaboration with Tonic Music, Beyond the Music, dBs Institute, and Access Creative College. Tonic Music are excited to partner with New Century Hall for Unplugged this World Mental Day to help raise awareness of the necessity of mental health support within the music industry, as well as our own support programmes and resources.

Additionally, the accessibility of live music events and mental health support to wider communities is of ultimate importance, partnering with organisations such as Beyond the Music, dBS Institute and Access Creative College will be a valued opportunity for Tonic Music to access these communities within Manchester.
